I wasn't able to uninstall Norton Antivirus Scan or reinstall 2004 for a while. But, the next time I rebooted one of our computers, 2004 loaded. However, even though the updater connected with LiveUpdate and appeared to check catalogs, and said it was finished and up to date, the status screen gave 8/14 as the last update date.
I went to Symantec's site for instructions. What I had to do was delete all the files in the temp folder, uninstall, delete all the temp files again, do a clean boot, and reinstall. It worked. I think I did all the uninstalling from a clean boot, just to make sure. 2003 wouldn't uninstall, but the reinstall of 2004 seemed to take care of it.
The Norton installation can be painful; your experience is not surprising. It happens in a small percentage of PCs for no apparent reason, but it obviously DOES happen, since the Symantec site has tech support pages behind every error message you encountered.
