Norton SystemWorks and ilookup problems Norton SystemWorks and ilookup problems

(Windows 98) I installed Norton Systemworks and downloaded a firewall from Symantec, and the combination of those two things really, really messed up my computer. I'm writing to you from the public library. Is there any way to uninstall those two things? I've searched, but am unable to locate any way to do it. I can get onto my AoL account, and I can do some things without going onto the Internet, but my DSL is really messed up. The reason I tried installing those two items was the garbage that was coming in, and a nasty little thing called i-lookup and its attendant toolbar. Norton was unable to get rid of them. How do I clean this stuff out?

Boot the computer into Safe Mode -- While it's starting up and still in the black diagnostic screen, tap on the F8 key once or twice a second. It will come up into a black-and-white menu of boot options. (If it boots into Windows, you missed the 2-second window of opportunity when the machine "notices" this keystroke. Reboot and try again.) At the boot menu, take Option 3 -- Safe Mode. The Windows Desktop will look different and not everything will work, but you can do what you have to do.

Once in Safe Mode, go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all of Systemworks. If given the option to remove or not remove certain files, say "yes, remove ALL these files". You may have to reboot; if so, go back into Safe Mode the same way, with the F8 key.

Remove the following programs: Any Norton-related items, any Symantec-related items, and especially Live Update and LiveReg (registration). You may have to reboot again or even twice again. Keep at it until the software is as cleared out as it can be. Then boot again -- Safe Mode will work -- and remove the following:

  • all files from C:\TEMP (if it exists) and C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (Some files may resist being removed; let them be and work around them until you've cleaned the folder out.)
  • any Symantec or Norton folders under C:\PROGRAM FILES
  • any Symantec or Norton folders under C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES

and then reboot again in normal mode. You may get error messages saying that certain files are missing; that's okay, you're going to reinstall the files anyway.

Once you get to your Windows Desktop, reinstall Systemworks. If the firewall is part of Systemworks, great, you're done. If the firewall is NOT part of Systemworks, then download ZoneAlarm from www.zonealarm.com. It's an excellent free firewall and will not conflict with the Norton software.

If while installing Systemworks you get error messages, especially numbered ones that correspond to error message explanations on the Symantec Web site, then more scouring out needs to be done -- especially cleaning of the Windows Registry.

It's a pain, but conflicts between various Symantec and Norton modules are not uncommon.

My preference would be to install ONLY Norton Antivirus from the Systemworks package. I am not a Systemworks fan.

Once you get the antivirus going, be sure to do a Live Update and download all the new virus definitions and program modules FIRST THING. Just about everybody who doesn't have an up-to-the-minute virus scanner is getting infected.
