What is a domain name?

Take a look at the address bar at the top of this window. To the right of "https://" (which may not be visible) is the domain name. In our case, it's landmarkcomputer.com.  Anything to the right of that determines a page on the Web site, or a tracking cookie, or another identifier of some sort.  

The domain name identifies your own electronic space on the World Wide Web.  It's a brand that, for most of us, means a Web site and an email address.

Can I afford it?

Often the first question is “what will it cost,” so let’s talk about pricing first.

Data recovery costs vary with complexity and amount of work required, but the majority of jobs cost no more than $150.  On the high end, recovery can cost as much as a few thousand dollars, but most people (and most small businesses) won’t – and don’t need to – pay that kind of money.

If we’re talking more complicated work, the fee can typically in the range of $850-$1350 – but you pay that only if recovery is successful.

Add to that the cost of a new hard drive, which is somewhere between $45 and $300, depending on type and capacity.

How do you recover my files?

Different data recovery cases require different techniques. The first stop for your inaccessible files is our in-house recovery lab, where we identify the problem and determine the best way to retrieve your files.

A quick visit to Landmark Labs may be all that’s needed.  We are often able to recover your files without complication.  That’s typically the case when files are inaccessible because of software problems.  If the hard drive won’t boot, the user profile is inaccessible, or the file allocation tables are corrupted, we can typically get your files back, totally intact.

Hardware problems make recovery more complicated, but even there, we often have success doing the work in house.  We use forensic software that attempts to recover every sector on your hard drive.  A typical one-Terabyte drive has two billion data sectors.  Very often we can recover every single sector.  Even when a handful of sectors are unrecoverable, the damage may be so limited that you will never encounter it.  Sometimes we need to run a repair on your operating system.  Sometimes you’ll need to reinstall a program.  You may lose a file or two.  For most people, that’s a satisfactory outcome, considering the modest price and quick turnaround.

What if it’s really complicated?

If we cannot recover your files in our lab, then we turn to our clean-room recovery facility.  We've partnered with an ISO-certified lab that has been successfully recovering files on a nationwide basis for almost 20 years. As the primary reseller of their services in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, we offer a friendly, knowledgeable front-end for this top-flight data recovery provider.

No matter how severe the case, they generally have the technical capability and the necessary experience to resolve the issue and get your data back.  We explain what they do and how they do it so that you don’t have to deal with unknown technicians.

What will the clean room charge?

If you agree to have our clean room facility work on your files, there’s no additional charge – at first.  We send them your hard drive for evaluation.  Shipping’s on us.

You’ll get an expert evaluation to find out exactly what’s the issue is with your device, and to determine the complexity of the recovery.

The clean room technicians do the necessary work to get your files back.  If they cannot recover your data, there’s no charge – period.  If they’re successful, they offer a firm price quotation for providing your files.  You’re free to accept it or reject it.  Because each job is different, there’s no typical price, but you’ll know how much the job costs before you spend a dime.

Once your files are marked as recoverable, we provide you with a complete list of recoverable items along with the cost of recovery services. The final price is based on the complexity of the recovery.  Logical errors usually cost less to resolve than mechanical failures.  There’s a range of recovery times, too. Lower priority repairs cost less than high-priority work.

No Data, No Charge

Bottom line: On the unlikely chance that the data is unrecoverable, there’s no further charge.

If you wish to proceed with recovery, you already know exactly what it will cost.

Once the job is done, we download your files and deliver them in one of several ways.  We can put the data on a new, bootable hard drive, if it’s a full-drive recovery.  We can put it on a USB stick or USB hard drive.  We can remotely access your computer and put the files in their proper folders.  Or you can simply download the data yourself.

USB- or network-based backup: popular, flexible, programmable

This is today's popular hardware-based backup.  Sophisticated software backs up your computer on a regular basis as a scheduled background job.  You determine how often, how many backups, and what type of backup you prefer.  

The advantage of this type of hardware-based backup is that it enables backup-in-depth.  Easily mount backups from yesterday, last month, or last year.  Restore files or whole operating systems within minutes when your computer's files are scrambled or missing.  

Removable hard drive: an old favorite that's still popular

With the removable hard drive option, we provide a second hard disk in a removable tray.  Pop the tray into the computer, boot the computer using a customized CD or diskette which we provide, run the simple backup program, and then remove the tray and put it in a safe place. You're totally backed up.

Landmark's removable hard drive backup system has several advantages over tape backup or copying files to CDs or DVDs:

• The tray and its mounting hardware are inexpensive; most models are $35.  Additional removable trays for more in-depth backup cost even less.
• We can use your old hard disk if you take the opportunity to upgrade to a larger, faster hard drive.  That gives you a brand-new primary drive with a new warranty, and takes the pressure off the older drive, which will only be used for ten minutes a week (or month, or day, depending on your frequency of backup).
• If your computer suffers a catastrophic hard disk failure, you can use the backup drive as your new primary drive until you replace the dead drive.
• The backup system does not rely on your operating system at all, so if your Windows has gone belly-up, you can still restore from backup.  Ten minutes and you're back up and running.
• Unlike tape backups and compressed image backups, all backed-up data is saved in its original form and is accessible on a random-access basis.  If you've lost a file, just insert the backup tray -- without even rebooting -- and drag a copy of the file from the backup to your primary hard drive.

* Backup times depend on several variables, including vintage of your computer, processor speed, amount of data on the hard disk, and the efficiency of both the hard disk and drive controller.   Landmark backup systems currently in use are backing up small business servers in as little as six minutes. On older systems the process can take as long as an hour or more.  The median speed is about 30 minutes.

Can you design a Web site for me?

We get asked that a lot.

The answer is yes, we can, but whether we should design a site for you depends on your expectations.

We specialize in developing starter sites for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and small- to medium-sized affinity groups getting started on the Web. We also upgrade or maintain existing sites for clients whose online presence needs work.

We use good old HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and WordPress, a well-known Content Management System.  We experiment with various open source Web site builders and editors, such as Ghost and Silex, along with other CMS packages, such as Joomla and Concrete.  (We wrote this Web site in Ghost.  Among its maddening idiosyncrasies is one that prevents us from hyperlinking to its own Web site, which is https://ghost.org.  Grrrr.)

We build each site in such a way that our clients can easily maintain the Web site after it's up and running.

If you want a structure that you can modify yourself, we're a great resource. If you need some minor Web work done, we can do it economically and intelligently.

If you want a Content Management System, a membership site, or a basic e-store set up, we can do that for you, too.

Labor is warranted for a year at Landmark's facility in Alexandria, Virginia. Components in our normal product line are warranted for a term of one year from the date of purchase. Some components are warranted for longer periods by their manufacturers. Non-stock, special, or custom-ordered components and peripherals are covered under their respective manufacturer's warranty.

Because each client has different support needs, Landmark offers a range of programs to meet them, including depot, parts only, and on-site plans.

Standard Warranty: All systems carry a one-year depot warranty, which covers service at Landmark's facility in Alexandria, Virginia.

Optional Three-year Depot Warranty: For additional peace of mind, you may upgrade the standard one-year warranty to a three-year depot warranty at a competitive price.
